Surrounded by beautiful woodland, the Tarr Steps on Exmoor is an example of a 'clapper' bridge and is constructed entirely from large stone slabs and boulders. The woodland reserve primarily consists of oak woodland but pockets of richer soil support ash, hazel and sycamore, while drier areas have been colonized by beech. In the spring visitors to the woods can see extensive carpets of bluebell. There is a pleasant café by the steps.

The delightful quayside village of Appledore is situated where the Taw and Torridge rivers meet. It boasts a small but great range of shops, pubs and art galleries. A thriving fishing and trading village since the 14th century, the Quay is central to life in the village and it is here you will find many activities including fishing trips, the local ferry, rowing events and crabbing contests. A settlement here can be traced back to Saxon times. In Elizabethan times, Appledore along with Bideford, was the largest importer of tobacco. For eating, we recommend Johns, The Coffee Cabin, The Yard, Market Street Kitchen, The Royal George Inn and The Flame Factory.

It sounds a bit cheesy, but sheep-themed park The Big Sheep delivers a surprisingly fun day out. Where else can you bet your ewe-ros (the park's currency) on the sheep racing and see border collies round up Indian runner ducks? As well as sheep shearing, lamb feeding and horse whispering, there are pony rides, farm safaris, self-drive tractors and a soft play barn. There's an on-site brewery, and the Shepherds Restaurant does cream teas. If you tire of sheep puns, the site is also home to Battlefield Live for hi-tech laser gun battles and next door is the Ultimate Adventure Centre, with high ropes, zip-wires and mountain boarding.

On Lundy Island wildlife outnumbers the residents. Lookk out for the bright-beaked puffins, enjoy numerous sightings of seabirds, feral deer and Soay sheep, and with any luck spot dolphins on the 11-mile ferry crossing. Be warned that it’s a steep ascent from the boat to up the cliffs, but once you are there, the terrain is more level. If you can muster the energy to climb another 147 steps, look out over Devon, Cornwall, Wales and Somerset from the lamp chamber of the old lighthouse. Dramatically sited on top of a tor, Dunster Castle has existed since Norman times. Its impressive medieval gatehouse and ruined tower are a reminder of its turbulent history. The castle you see today, owned by the Luttrell family for more than 600 years, became an elegant country home during the 19th century. The terraced garden displays Mediterranean and subtropical plants, while the tranquil riverside wooded garden below, with its natural play area, leads to the historic working watermill. Dunster itself is a delightful medieval town - make sure you take a walk around while you are there.

The village of Clovelly delights with cobbled, traffic-free streets, donkeys, sledges and historic harbour. The stunning views, peaceful tranquility and cobbled high street of this world famous fishing village, built into a cleft in a 400' high cliff, tumbles its way down past whitewashed cottages festooned with flowers to the tiny working port. It is famous for its donkeys, which traditionally carry goods up the hill; sledges bring things down. There are links with Charles Kingsley, Turner, Dickens and the Spanish Armada.
